According to reports, a federal jury in Seattle, USA, issued a verdict last Thursday requiring Boeing to pay US$72 million to electric aircraft startup Zunum Aero for allegedly stealing the latter’s trade secrets.
The jury found that Boeing copied the startup\’s technology after investing in Zunum and drove it out of the market. Therefore, it required it to pay compensation.
However, Boeing plans to appeal the decision.
The company said in a statement: Boeing disagrees with the jury\’s verdict. This verdict has neither legal nor factual basis.
The report also said that under trade secrets law, at least part of the compensation amount can be tripled.
Zunum was founded in 2013. It aims to manufacture short-distance electric aircraft.
Boeing Ventures invested $5 million in the Seattle-area startup in 2017.
Zunum claimed in a 2020 lawsuit that Boeing used its trade secrets to develop its hybrid commuter plane.
The company said in the lawsuit that although the company itself began selling the aircraft in 2022, it was later forced to stop sales due to a shortage of funds caused by Boeing.
However, Boeing denied the accusations and told the court that Zunum\’s goals were beyond its capabilities and that it lost investors.
